Thriving in Recovery
Chip Dodd, PhD; Colton Shannon, PhD; and Phil Herndon, MA

The day’s experience explores our ultimate problem according to AA Founder Bill Wilson—our difficulty forming true partnerships with others; and how we are created to live fully in relationship with ourselves, others, and God. This will be an interactive presentation with tools and experiences that offer "take home" benefits.

About Dr. Dodd

Headshot of Dr. Chip Dodd

Chip Dodd, PhD, has guided thousands of professionals from all walks of life and their families across the “Badlands” of addiction, stress illnesses, and burnout to the lives they were created to have. For 23 years, he was the executive director of the Center for Professional Excellence (CPE), a treatment center in Nashville. In 2019, Chip started a consulting, mentoring, and counseling practice, which can be found at chipdodd.com.

He is the author of multiple books including The Voice of the Heart in 2001, which speaks to the importance of feelings as tools and gifts, which has impacted lives around the world. Each successive book, The Perfect Loss, Needs of the Heart, Keeping Heart, Anthem to the Invisible, Parenting with Heart, Hope in the Age of Addiction, and How Are You Feeling Today? speak to our desire to live a full life, love others well, and lead lives that leave a valuable legacy.

Dr. Dodd received his PhD in Counseling from the University of North Texas in 1990 and his MA in English from the University of Mississippi in 1985. While in Texas he co-founded Bent Tree Counseling Center in Dallas, serving as clinical director until moving to Tennessee to continue work with professionals and their families.

About Mr. Herndon

Mr. Herndon uses a dynamic approach to help his clients recover their hearts and redeem their stories. His therapeutic approach is grounded in the Spiritual Root System™, and is informed by the work of Irvin Yalom, Curt Thompson, Dan Siegel, and Dan Allender. He also integrates perspectives from Judeo-Christian traditions, existential philosophy, and pastoral care. Phil works with individuals who have lost their way through addiction, anxiety, depression, struggles with spirituality, or burnout to walk them through the tumultuous and scary times that are so common to the human experience.

He worked in the trucking business through college and after college until finally realizing his true passion was helping people walk through difficulties and heartache. He completed graduate school in 1992 with a Master of Arts degree in counseling and religious education.

Mr. Herndon served as a pastor in Texas for 15 years until joining the Center for Professional Excellence in 2005 where he served as Clinical Director until 2020. He became the Clinical Director and co-owner of (what is now) River Tree in 2020 and loves his role in developing, encouraging, and equipping the staff as they walk with people through their life journeys.

He lives in Murfreesboro with his wife Sheila and they have one son, Luke.
